to santa rosa. arson investigators are hard at work. the first fire started just before 10:00 last night at st. rose church on 10th street. minutes later fire crews were called to church of incarnation and then a third call came in about a fire at an engineering company on third street called carlie macy engineering. all fires were quickly put out and damage is minimal. investigators believe the fires are connected. right now there's no evidence the fires are hate crimes but at this point nothing is being ruled out. so far obviously no arrests have been made. >>> it is october first and blazing hot outside. a fall heat wave continues to grip the bay area. let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri in the nbc bay area weather center. super hot today. >> feeling more like july here across a lot of the bay area. good enough for a record in santa rosa. 103 in gilroy. walnut creek, 102. san francisco, 92 degrees. sweltering for city standards. upper 80s in the south bay. let's take you to that live hd sky camera network right now. a bit hazy. the winds are trying to turn more onshore

investigators in santa rosa busy trying to determine if an arsonist is to blame for three suspicious fires. they happened at two churches and a railroad engineering firm. all three fires were started by a molotov cocktail. the damage was minor, no one was hurt. >>> a major warning and massive recall for peanut butter brands is expanding. sunland is adding more store pra brand names to a recall list. they provide peanut butter and other products to major chains. some of the stores include target archer farms, safeway open nature and fsh and & easy. also nature valley, earthbalance and serious food. the recall first began after people started getting sick after eating trader joe's brand peanut butter. centers for disease control and prevention says there are 30 cases of salmonella illnesses across 19 different states. >>> the man accused of walking into a peninsula elementary school campus and abducting a 9-year-old student is expected in court today. 25-year-old bradley mrozek could toor answer to charges this afternoon. he walked into parkside elementary and grabbed a young student from a

. down to 75. santa rosa from 102 to 68. plenty of 50s on the weather board from santa rosa down to san jose. even finding some mid 50s here in cupertino. two to three days ago, we had temperatures in the 70s and still in the 80s down in the south bay. we had this on shore wind 5 to 10 miles per hour and that is good enough for fog for tonight. let's go outside. what you can see here in san francisco is a low cloud cover building up. that is going to produce low cloud cover as we head throughout this morning. over the next two to three days, no beach weather. all that hot summer weather, just a weather tease, if you will. coastal breeze, fog, definitely keep your jacket handy. not only in san francisco, but for a lot of the bay. in the north bay, east bay and the south bay. we're going to start off tomorrow morning with one of the cloudiest mornings we've had about 6 to 7 days with widespread cloud cover and fog, back into alameda county, down into santa clara. we have filtered sunshine and right up against the coastline, tough to find any sun. so no beach day as we head throughout frid

by this weekend. speaking of the cool, it's happening right now. anywhere from 59 in santa rosa to low 60s in the bay area. this time last night, 80s in the bay area. now the natural ocean ac filtering in. 62 in danville. winds from 5 to 10 miles per hour. that's starting to push in some of this fog that we saw earlier today. let's get a look outside of our live hd sky camera. not too much in the way of fog from san bruno toward the bay bridge. however, visibility is getting reduced. in san francisco, a little bit of cloud cover pass by the lens. and there it is right now. pushing right across the golden gate bridge. so that's going to dramatically change our picture for tomorrow morning. all right. back on the weather boards, what we'll find over the next 48 to 72 hours is this system we've been tracking for the past couple of days. it's pretty slow to move. no rainfall the next two to three days. it's all about the cooling breeze returning, pushing all that hot air we had well off to he north. primarily this will push at the coastline. instead of 70s, 80s and 90s. we'll go with 50s and 6

of the woodwork when things heat extreme. 107, yeah. in gilroy yesterday. santa rosa, 102. here's the big winner. san francisco didn't break a record but hit 94 yesterday. we've been keeping records in the city of san francisco for over 100 years. so it was a hot day yesterday. 62 degrees in sunnyvale. we're at 69, almost 70, at 4:40 in the morning in san jose. an indication of a warm day ahead. we stop the clock on your future cast. at about noon. look what's starting to creep up. the return of the low cloud cover. that will continue to push in. even a little bit of drizzle as we head to 10:00 tonight. this is all courtesy of a system of low pressure that is slowly tracking closer. that is going to drop numbers by about ten degrees today. an additional ten tomorrow. then we drop like a rock into the weekend. 70s return inland. 94 in livermore today. 85 in san jose. comfortable 78 degrees in the city of san francisco. where a lot of people don't have air conditioners to cool them off, so that's good news, mike. i bet you had your ac going in your car yesterday. >> yeah, i spent a lot of the afte

might need it up in santa rosa. here is the change. look at the jetstream taking a significant dip. area of low pressure arrives as we head through the next couple days. we're not expecting any showers out of this system potentially until late saturday into sunday and the best chance will be up in the north bay. a little fog and drizzle on the way for tomorrow morning. in fact, some cities aren't going to break out of the thick fog and that could become problematic. if you wanted to check out those blue angels, we'll take you to that forecast coming up. 81 in livermore, 66, back to the 60s in san francisco. 70 degrees in santa cruz. you can still hit the beach there, last day to do so before the 60s return to santa cruz as well. here we go, 77 degrees by friday. that's livermore. we'll be about 77 degrees in san jose today. saturday into sunday things really change. we get some showers. and then next week overall looking cool and cloudy and feeling like fall. temperatures falling below your seasonal averages for october. 4:49. back to you guys for now. >> thank you very much. >>> how's t

, fairfield. this morning we are starting out nice and mild. 59 in livermore. kind of cool up in santa rosa, 51 degrees here and 54 in novato. however, temperatures are going to soar, jumping by about 40 degrees in santa rosa before all is said and done today. the reason why, we have this really strong ridge of high pressure. winds are pumping from land to sea and that's a warming trend. they actually warm up and dry out as they pump back to the pacific ocean, so for us today because we're starting out so mild, high pressure is just about as strong as it was yesterday, we are talking about the hottest day. 103 degrees in places like livermore. we also have poor air quality, which means if you don't have an air conditioner in your home and want to open up those windows, right now is the time to do it. close your blinds before you leave and that will help keep your house a little cooler later on today. 103 degrees at 4:00 p.m. inland, 90 degrees bayside. oakland 90. san francisco 80 degrees. we're talking about 70s at the end of the forecast. let's check your drive, here's mike. >>> we're goi

and this happened just about 20 minutes ago. today, day one of a two-day strike for nurses at santa rosa memorial hospital. that strike started at 5:00 this morning and will end at 5:00 thursday morning. union leaders say recent pay cuts and wage disagreements are at the center of all this. the hospital says hundreds of replacement nurses have been brought in just to keep up with the hospital needs and open during the strike. >>> we want to check the forecast right now as promised with meteorologist christina loren. it was so hot yesterday, did we break any records? >> we broke numerous records. i think the most substantial record of note is hayward, 95 degrees. just smashing the old record which was 82 degrees. as we head throughout the day today, we're talking about another scorcher, but when you hit 95 in hayward and not much warmner places like santa rosa, your valleys, it's an indication of offshore flow. basically the marine influence has been negated by offshore flow so it feels as though we are inland and not getting any of that pacific marine influence. 100 degrees today, 90 bayside, 80

letters into them for years. rosa started noticing something strange a couple of months ago. >> i think somebody tried to get the mail from the box. and it's a headache because we have to go like maybe every two days to the post office and get our mail. every day. >> reporter: neighbors say they came to the front panel and didn't think there was a problem. but when they stepped to the back side of the mailboxes, they knew they were in trouble. we discovered three different community mailboxes that had been vandalized. that means at least 36 residents have to make that trip to the post office to get their mail. this man says he needs this resolved quickly. he hasn't received his pg&e bill and worries about late fees. we spoke with the property manager who says she doesn't know who's responsible to replace the mailboxes. the owners, the renters, or the post office. the post office did not return our calls today. now rosa says she worries about identity fraud. >> yes. of course i worry about it. >> reporter: in san jose, damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. >>> the bay area's new catholic a

. we're in the 40s and 50s. 43 in santa rosa, 55 in san francisco to start. and here's what we're looking at. area of low pressure has just been sitting and spinning offshore. as we head throughout the next couple days this guy finally arrives and we're expecting our first showers this morning. as we kick off rush hour at 7:00 a.m., already mostly cloudy conditions from novato down to san francisco but watch what happens between 7:00 and 10:00. that's right, a little rain band moves through so you might want to grab that umbrella sfr san francisco down to san mateo. by noon we'll see the system push back out to sea as high pressure builds in from the midsection of the nation. by tomorrow that system of low pressure moves all the way inland. high pressure finally breaks down. we're talking about hit or miss showers just about all day long throughout your tuesday, especially at the coastal cities and along the peninsula, but highs are going to be just about perfect all week long and you're not getting a whole lot of separation between your temperatures that you get right at the c

record in santa rosa, reaching 101. shattering that old number of 87 set back in 2001. and to put all this in a perspective, you know when it gets hot inland, it's not always hot at the coastline. in san francisco we did just that for the day. reaching 94 degrees. getting close to that record of 96. but here is the thing. as we look ahead to our forecast, by thursday, temperatures expected to drop down into 60s. so not too much longer expected of this at the coastline. upper 90s and low 100 for the east bay. it is a scorcher as we have been saying. take plenty of breaks out here tonight, even if you're knowing the night is going to be falling, these numbers are going to be dangerously hot. let's take you outside of the live hd sky camera. not working in san jose. we have the haze with us in about 48 hours. we'll gradually get some cloud cover moving in. and in san francisco, we do have plenty of wild action happening this week. look at this cruise ship right now across the bay. that's a gorgeous shot. america's cup, fleet week, and plenty of a's and giants action as we head throughout

in the north bay. 47 degrees in santa rosa. 46 in novato and 56 starting out nice and comfortable in the city by the bay. all the action is happening for the bay's big weekend. taking you down south and 54 degrees this morning in sunnyvale. here's where it gets interesting. we have an area of low pressure. it's just offshore. look at the showers. very close in the bay area, but it doesn't lock like they are going to push in. we stopped the clock for ow the futurecast. look at this. almost completely clear conditions over san francisco. palo alto. m marine layer out in the pacific. i am concerned about the fog becoming a problem for the blue angels. we stop the clock for you at 5:00 a.m. also adding the chance for showers late or tomorrow. so your best bet is going to be today if you are going to hit the action. it works out like this. 69 degrees in san francisco and 70 in san jose. around 75 degrees out in livermore. you will be comfortable in santa cruz at 67. i think all the action will be pointed right at san francisco. one of the reasons why, our own giants and nbc bay area is the proud h

. low 50s already in santa rosa. mid-40s by tomorrow morning. 59 san jose. 58 in san francisco. and a little bit of a sea breeze still out there around fairfield. the on shore winds picked up today. you may have noticed the plu angels. we had blow clouds west of the golden gate. that was a staple of the afternoon along with cooler temperatures. san francisco a high of 60 degrees. tonight we will see patches of low clouds returning. maybe mist in a few spots tomorrow morning along the does. our afternoon tomorrow a is cooler as more clouds spill in. here the change. not only cooler temperatures but maybe a chance of seeing a few showers especially in the south bay and the santa cruz mountains. the satellite-radar view shows the same area of low pressure off shore waited if the weekend to finish. it will bring in a chance of showers midweek and thursday and friday it shifts in to southern california and showers moving with it well to the south of santa cruz by the end of the week tomorrow, partly cloudy skies. not a lot in the way of showers except up to lake county and northern

rosa. beautiful sunrise from san bruno. now we're getting that gorgeous sunrise here in san jose. so grab your jacket as jacket weather ha returned. you can see a little light activity in san francisco as we speak. we'll get more throughout the day today. if you live south of san mateo, even in the east bay, you don't have to worry about getting rained on at this point. an area of low pressure has been sitting and spitting offshore over the course of the entire weekend. this will move inland tonight and tomorrow but an outer band of rain will push onshore today. between 8:00 and 10:00 we're expecting rain from san francisco down to san mateo. as we continue throughout the day, by about noon we'll clear your skies out. we'll get a gorgeous sunrise this morning. the official time is 7:11. 65 degrees in san francisco today, 70 in los gatos and 67 down in santa cruz. if you're looking for beach weather, we've got it for you just around the corner with a warmup on the way after we get through these showers. 70 degrees. that's all we're expecting tuesday into wednesday inland. you'll strug

it to friday so we're off to a good start. 55 in novato and 56 in stinson beach. in santa rosa the 40s have returned. throughout the day today temperatures will be comfortable but we're expecting a lot of cloud cover, even a little bit of drizzle as of 11:00 a.m. picking up on your futurecast. temperatures, though, much cooler than where we started out the week. 63 degrees in san francisco, 71 in redwood city and 71 degrees in los gatos. i don't think you need to carry that umbrella with you all day but hit-or-miss light showers certainly a possibility each and every day all the way through wednesday with two areas of low pressure that will impact our weather. let's check your drive. >>> the san mateo bridge, look at the right side of your screen, the westbound direction away from us. you see over on the shoulder there is flashing lights for a tow truck. that's what i've been tracking. no incidents reported but we do see slower driving toward the high rise but it is moving. the bay bridge very crowded, very slow down the east shore freeway and off of the maze. expect it all weekend long wit
